Pressure
Equalization Tubes
A
common qestion asked at the Center for
Hyperbaric Medicine is why do some patients
have tubes in
their ears ?
and will I need to
have tubes put in
my ears ?.
The
answer is patients who have problems
or may have problems equalizing their ears
during pressurization in
the chamber are
referred to
an ear, nose, and throat specialist
for polyethylene tube
insertion. These tubes
are the same as those placed in
children
who get frequent ear infections.

Pressure Equalization
Tubes
Pressure
Equalization tubes allow pressurized
air to
flow freely through the tympanic
membranes, therefore no
equalization
maneuvers are necessary by
the patient
to
clear their ears during HBO
therapy.
The graphic below actually
demonstrates tube
placement and how air
flows through the tube
during
treatment.

Not all patients will require PE
tube
placement,
only those patients who are unable to
equalize
pressure
by the usual techniques (yawning,
swallowing, plug nose and blow) or in patients
that do
not achieve relief by
use of these
methods.
There
are special considerations in the
care
of the ears which your ENT
specialist will
review with you should
it be necessary for
PE tube
placement.
If you have any concerns
with your ability to
clear your
ears before or during HBO therapy
please do not hesitate to speak
with a Center
for Hyperbaric staff
member or the HBO
physician.
