Christmas 2001 in the HBO Unit
How often will I
get an HBO treatment ?
Patients are scheduled to
receive hyperbaric oxygen treatments 5
days a week. If
a holiday falls on
a week day, the HBO unit will be
closed except for emergency cases. The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine will schedule your HBO treatments to
accommodate Wound Care Center and other physician appointments when the staff is
notified in advance.
How many treatments will I
have to take before I see results ?
Depending on
the patient's diagnosis, the number of
treatments taken before results are seen varies. In
cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, and air embolism, results are seen after the first HBO treatment. In
other diagnoses such as
radiation soft tissue injury, selected problem wounds, and necrotizing soft tissue infections results can be
noticed by the patient within the first 10
treatments. In other diagnoses, results are usually noticeable after 20
treatments. Angiogenesis (the formation of micro-capillaries) and the resolution or
diminishing of deep wound or
bone infection, may
not be evident to
the patient but can be
evaluated using a variety of diagnostic testing methods.
Why do I
have to wear special clothes inside the chamber
?
Our 100% cotton garments and bedding are specially treated and laundered in
order to prevent static electricity build-up. Synthetic clothing and bedding are avoided for this reason. For your comfort, we provide two choices of
garments, a set of scrubs like those worn by
hospital personnel or a
gown.
Will I sit in
a chair or
lie down on
the stretcher to get my
treatment
?
Most patients sit in
a chair that resembles a
recliner inside the chamber. The chamber utilized by
The Center For Hyperbaric Medicine, is
constructed to treat one seated patient, two seated patients, or one patient on
a stretcher. When the unit is has several patients a day, patients who have identical diagnoses or
the same ATA may be
placed in the chamber together. Of
course patients with contagious infections or
wounds that make sitting intolerable, will be
treated by themselves and will be given the choice of
sitting in a
chair or receiving treatment on a stretcher.
Can a family member stay in
the room
while
I get my treatment ?
No, family members are not permitted in
the chamber pit area due to
safety and patient privacy / confidentiality concerns. Family members are invited to
stay in the waiting room of
the Wound Care Center. The waiting area has a
television and fresh
coffee available for anyone accompanying an
HBO patient
receiving
treatment.
Can I
take a book or
newspaper inside with me
?
No. The paper and ink used in
printing books,
newspapers, and magazines is
considered flammable material and in
event the of
an emergency these items could fuel a
fire. A television and VCR are available for patient entertainment during HBO therapy. Our unit stocks a
large selection of
movies or you may bring in
one of your own provided it
is in good taste. Many patients choose to
sleep or nap during
therapy.
